Lap Around the Sun,biox an electronic orchestral lounge project, is the work of Gold Coast-based drummer and pianist, Peter Nicholas. Nicholas has performed for more than 20 years with various bands, including Brisbane Triple J Unearthed winners, The Daisycutters.  Whilst he has been writing and composing his own music on and off for several years, Lap Around the Sun became a serious focus for him in 2010.  The resourceful self-taught musician built his computer from scratch, and uses Swedish program ‘Reason’, a synthesiser, microphones, a very old tape machine and a collection of live instruments to compose, sample, record and mix his instrumental works.

Lap Around the Sun’s second EP, “Subway in Venice”, is currently in production getting set for release early 2017, and promises more of the signature electro orchestral/instrumental soundscapes that have been attracting a growing audience around the world.  The first single released from “Subway in Venice” is called, “Age” and is available now .

Lap Around the Sun’s debut EP, “Looking for Jess” released worldwide in December 2013, available on iTunes and all good download sites, features a number of tracks that have enjoyed both local and international recognition.   Debut single, “The Only Way”, described by Paul Blakey, Mastering Engineer at ‘12th and Vine Post’ as “sweet electro lounge sounds of a truly international standard” was a finalist in the 2013 Australian Independent Music Awards (AIMA) in the electronica/dance genre, and in 2014 was chosen for use in Canadian television’s broadcast of the Winter Olympics.  “After 5” made the top 10 finalists at the 2012 AIMA’s in the electronica/dance category.  “Her Sunday” was also a finalist at the 2012 AIMA’s and was picked up by American radio station CBS. “Sophisticated from start to finish, ‘Looking for Jess’ is a real headphone experience – the soundtrack to a movie that is yet to be made.” (C. Wilson: ‘Handsome Devil Music’, ‘The Daisycutters’).

Not surprisingly, Nicholas has a special penchant for film and tv score writing and is passionate about bringing emotion to the screen through his evocative and intricate compositions.  Having composed work for 2013 Tropscore Australia (“Tomorrow – Chloe’s Theme”) and more recently a film score challenge set by the world renowned Hans Zimmer (“So You’re Gone – Destiny’s Door” – listen on soundcloud), Nicholas has his sights set on a score-writing career.  No stranger to having musical recognition in film and TV, Nicholas’s successful career with The Daisycutters, saw a number of their hit singles enjoy airplay on TV shows such as “The Secret Life of Us”, “Home and Away” and UK series, “Teachers” as well as a high rotation Mastercard TV campaign.  Nicholas also wrote and co-wrote a number of instrumental pieces for films “Blurred” and “Kiss Me Stupid”.

Nicholas’s professional music career began in the early 1990’s drumming for Gold Coast indie-rock band The Sun Devils (where he met Cameron Wilson who went on to form and front The Daisycutters).  Nicholas left The Sun Devils to drum for successful Gold Coast covers bands, Wild Hearted and Hippopotamus and toured the east coast of Australia extensively for several years, securing residencies on island resorts and Japan, and toured with the likes of George Thorogood and Ian Moss.  He reconnected with Wilson and joined The Daisycutters as a founding member in 1997 and after the band was Unearthed by Triple J in 1999 spent the following nine years touring Australia.  Appearing on three studio albums, seven E.P.’s and ten film clips, Nicholas also performed with The Daisycutters at two Big Day Out festivals.  When the band wasn’t touring Nicholas was a DJ for a prominent Surfers Paradise nightclub.

Adjunct to the limelight of a successful and lengthy drumming career in indie-rock/pop bands, Nicholas is now indulging his more introspective side in composing the instrumental and electro lounge sounds of Lap Around the Sun. Multiple songs in production at any one time, the second EP “Subway in Venice” is set for release early 2017 with the first single, “Age” out now!
